Toronto, ON, Canada (4E) – Airbnb and Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa announced they are launching a new pilot project aimed to increase awareness about consumer’ and homeowners’ rights, including the obligation to pay taxes by people earning income through Airbnb .
The latest accord means Airbnb hosts will start receiving email notifications during tax season about their obligation to have their rentals earnings declared.
On average, Ontario hosts earn around $280 every month and rent out their accommodations 40 times per year, according to Airbnb’s Canadian manager Aaron Zifkin .
As a result of changes in technology, there is disruption taking place in traditional business models like the hotel industry, which is losing customers to Airbnb , according to Mr. Sousa. Despite this, Ontario is willing to embrace those changes.
Mr. Sousa couldn’t say if the government would introduce similar regulations to ride-sharing service Uber .
